This list of resources is intended as a guide with thanks to Mental Health First Aid England for most of these listings*

If you or someone you know, has attempted suicide or is in a crisis, call 999 and stay with them until the ambulance arrives.

If you're worried that someone is at immediate risk of taking their own life, you should do the following if you feel able:

  • you should remove anything the person could use to harm themselves (without endangering yourself)

  • stay with them

  • get emergency help.

IAPT (Improving access to psychological therapies)

IAPT is the NHS programme supporting rollout of NICE guideline recommended talking therapies for depression and anxiety disorders. Usually 2 types of therapy offered:

- High intensity therapy - usually CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) for moderate and severe depression, or:
- Low intensity therapy (usually cognitive behavioural approaches, included guided self-help and psychoeducational groups) for mild to moderate depression and anxiety).
In some areas self-referral to IAPT services is possible through website, in others referral is via GP. Local IAPT services can be found via NHS Choices website (follow links on IAPT’s main website). IAPT services often also have employment services or links to other services such as housing, drugs and benefits advice.
